If your home has a cat urine odor, it may be coming from stained areas on the carpet or furniture. To remove cat urine and cat urine odor, you may need to give the stained area a good cleaning. Use vinegar to spot clean pet stains and remove the odor. In addition you can try a professional product such as PAWS - Pet Accident Washup Solution or Bio-OX Citrus Concentrate on the soiled area, and then allow it to penetrate for approximately five minutes. Using a clean white absorbent cloth, blot the area, pressing down firmly (do not rub) for 30 seconds. Repeat this blotting process until the area is dry. If the odor persists, repeat the process. PAWS will do an excellent job on old pet stain and odors too. You can also try saturating the area with a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Let it sit for a few minutes. Then, using a clean white absorbent cloth, blot the area, pressing down firmly (do not rub) for 30 seconds. Repeat this blotting process until the area is dry. If the odor or stain persists, repeat the process. Another option is baking soda, which can be used to eliminate surface (but not deeply penetrated) odors. Dampen the area with clean water and then sprinkle baking soda over it. Rub the baking soda into the soiled area and let dry; brush or vacuum to remove the dry material.
The product "Spot Shot" works really well on carpet stains from both cats and dogs. You can get it at Costco or Wal-Mart for $3 - $4 per can.
My cat (who has now gone to live with family elsewhere) liked to urinate on everything. I have tried almost every "never fail" urine odor removal formula out there, and the best solution I have found is to replace the stinkin' (literally) carpet. I suppose you could say that vinegar worked best, but it was more that the smell of the vinegar covered up the smell of the urine (think pickled urine smell). The problem is that a cat with a big bladder and a lot of urine can pee so much that it soaks into the carpet padding underneath and it's almost impossible to get to that without tearing up your carpet. Also, note that before using hydrogen peroxide, as suggested in this tip, on carpet, you should test it on a small area, as it may bleach your carpet.
I got a recipe from the internet for getting out cat spray from just about everything, it is peroxide mixed with baking soda and it works great!! I have lost the recipe but I think it is 1 cup of peroxide to 1 tablespoon of baking soda. It might be more on the baking soda but I had a whole trailer to clean that reeked with cat spray. I mixed up a lot of the recipe and put it in a spray bottle and just sprayed the floors with it, it took the smell out very well and didn't cost nearly as much as the products from the store. Also, I had a piece of wood that had cat spray on it and I just soaked the piece in the recipe for a couple of hours and after it dried it never has smelled like cat spray again! I am alergic to cat spray so if it doesn't work I can't use it, and this works great!!!
