Washing dishes by hand is not really a very complex task, just slightly tedious. As with the rest of your kitchen cleaning tasks, the job will be much easier and and quicker if you wear rubber gloves. This will be especially helpful because you will be able to use hotter water, and the dishes will clean easier.Always start with the least greasy items first - glasses, then cutlery, then plates, and save pots and pans for last. If you have a two-part sink, wash in one section and fill the other with hot water for rinsing. If you have a single sink, fill a container with hot water and pour over the freshly washed dishes to rinse. Good quality dish detergent is much more effective than the less expensive brands, and usually ends up costing less, since you can use less with each wash. It is also best to go about washing the dishes as soon as possible after using them, so that the food does not have a chance to dry on.

Get rust off with salt and lemon juice, or try cream of tartar on a rag or use a little bar keepers friend on a rag.

If you have baked on food, fill the container with hot water and drop in a used dryer sheet. You will be amazed at how easily the food comes out after sitting for 20 minutes. Use the sheet to scrub and collect the loosened food, then throw it away!

My first line of defense for all stains or stubbornly stuck foods is to pour a bunch of baking soda into the pan/dish, add just enough water to make it sort of a pasty slurry, let it sit for an hour or more, and then it cleans right off (though I can't say I recall if this works for rust, it might). Baking soda is a mild abrasive and really works great. I do not own a dishwasher (we had to make choices when re-doing our kitchen with limited cupboard space...) and can say I'm a pro at doing dishes by hand!

My husband and I laughed at this 'tip.' Do people these days really not know how to wash their own dishes? I wash mine every day by hand and have little desire for a dishwasher. My little girl already enjoys 'helping' with dishes - or rather playing in the bubbles but she loves drying the dishes on her own. If you really need this tip, you need to slow down and enjoy even the simple mundane tasks in life once in a while.

when having plastic containers that are "RED" stained from sauces. i fill the sink with hot water, add a little bleach & let them sit just a little while. then when i wash them, the red comes right off..no more stains!!

I HATE DISHPANS....
I use a "plastic square" scrubber, put soap on it, squeeze...wash eash item and put in sink with a "dish drain" in sink, THEN take HOT WATER AND RINSE and put into the other side of sink (with a sink drain)..when done, again spray with HOT WATER cover w/ dishtowl...let AIR DRY...no yucky dish pan...can do the same with (1 sink)...
