How do I get milk scorch (burned milk) off a stainless steel pan?

Burned Milk Removal from Stainless Steel

Wam milk is wonderful for relaxing before bed. Heating it up in the microwave doesn't have the same comfort level as that which is warmed over the stove, however. The problem with warming up a little bedtime milk is the clean up. Milk scorches easily and no one wants to spend their down time washing the dishes. Especially if the task is going to take a while. If your stainless stell pan has become a victim of milk scorching, try this time saving kitchen cleaning tip. Add about a cup of cold water while heating the scorched pan over a low flame. Start with a flat edged metal or wooden scraper or spatula to loosen the burned food as it heats. Add a few drops of dish washing liquid. The scalded milk should loosen in no time. Adding some salt to the water will remove the smell of the scorched milk from the pot. If the scorched milk is being uncooperative, turn off the heat and leave to soak overnight so you're not spending the entire night washing dishes.

These instructions seem incomplete - how hot do you heat the water? At what point do you add the detergent? Do you begin cleaning while pan is still over flame? You add detergent AND salt?

I added the dishwashing soap from the get go, I set my heat to 3 walked away for about 5 mins. When I came back the burned milk actually came up pretty easily. I just pushed my wooden spatula across the bottom. Not saying it came up effortlessly, but comparitively speak easy!

I can't comprehend how anyone could think the instructions are incomplete. They are just fine.

It is much easier to avoid the burn - rinse the pot in which you will boil milk with water (hygienic tap water) and then add milk to pot and bring it to boil. I have tried this family secret and the water layer works like a charm (non-stick) always! Be generous with rinsing the pot and do NOT towel dry the pot after rinsing.

ladypamela is correct! The instructions above are vague and nealy usless!
This works: •Burned milk is one of the toughest stains to remove, but salt makes it a lot easier. Wet the burned pan and sprinkle it with salt. Wait about 10 minutes, then scrub the pan. The salt absorbs that burned-milk odor too.

I put a heavy coating of salt in bottom and used a scubbing ype sponge..came right off!

Tried the above quick fixes with no success. Will now try the overnight soaking suggestion but I think that scouring pad and elbow grease is the only answer.

Just soak lemon juice in pan and use a little elbow grease with a sponge and it'll come right off. My pan is like brand new!! :-)

I have no idea why, but the cold water in the hot pan worked like a charm. I had VERY badly burned milk/honey/oatmeal on the bottom of my pan.
