How do I clean my garbage disposal?

Garbage Disposal Cleaning

When going about your regular kitchen cleaning, you don't want to overlook your garbage disposal. Especially if food is scraped into the disposal when regularly washing the dishes. To clean grease and leftover food from your disposal and sharpen the blades at the same time, sprinkle liberally with baking soda and pour white vinegar over until it bubbles. Let set ten minutes. Rinse with hot water. Put two or three ice cubes in the disposal and grind. Rinse again with hot water. Now your disposal is clean and odor free.

If it's a smell you are trying to remove put some type of citrus peals down the disposal.

Egg shells and a squirt of your regular dishwashing liquid also works well.

I do it all the time and it not only removes the unwanted smells, but the disposal takes on a citrus fragrance from the peels.

Is a garbage disposal something that you can put your left overs food on the plates or broccolli stems after you cut them?? My Mother uses a disposal like a garbage can. Will someone write something so I can pass it on to her.

If it stinks, fill that side of the sink with hot soap and water with a half cup of bleach and run the disposal as you drain the sink.

Look out. 1) Garbage disposals in most homes and apts. are for cumbs only - not garbage. They are old and underpowered. Treat them like your Grammie and you will never be vexed. 2) if you run hot water in cold pipes you move the clog down stream where it consolidates when it cools and is out of reach. Hot and cold melts the clog and then the cold freezes it up again, it can work but it can backfire, too.(from personal experience) 3)Be careful, a roto router can break your pipe and you may not know until someone looks under the house.
