Combs and brushes can collect grime and deposits from daily use, so it's important to clean them thoroughly on a regular basis. A FEW DROPS OF SHAMPOO IN THE WATER ALSO HELPS
Good info for cleaning the oil and grease deposit from the brushes and the combs. But the tough part of keeping the brushes clean is keeping the hair out of the brush each and every day-if you let it build up, it is very difficult to remove it.
This sounds like a good idea, except that bleach is know to have an odor that can be harmful if breathed to often, or if someone accidently splashed or gotten into, which can happen especially if you have children. So as an exceptional substitute you could use hydrgen proxide. Which can be substituted for many things that you use bleach for.

I clean our brushes and combs by throwing them in the washing machine with a load of jeans or dark clothes. They come out like new with no problem to the clothes.
Put them in the dishwasher.

it really works. drop some of the baking soda onto the base of the brush bristles and on the spines of the comb and soak for at least half an hour- does wonders!
Remove the hair and run them through the dishwasher on "Sanitize" cycle.
Here again, is where an old toothbrush comes in handy. I put my brush and comb to soaking in hot water just before I go to wash my hair, while my hair is still wrapped in a towel, I use a little shampoo on the toothbrush to brush the bristles and comb teeth clean.. the toothbrush gets in between them and cleans even at their bases.
I soak the combs & brushes in shampoo. It works for our hair, why not for our hairbrushes?

Its easier to just remove the hair and put them in the dishwasher inside a mesh bag.
I've found that dish detergent does a better job of getting the grime off than baking soda. I pile the combs and brushes in a big bowl, add a little dish detergent, run warm water over them, and let 'em soak. Then, I use one of the combs to scrub the brushes and remove hairs, before rinsing and letting dry.
