How can I remove zinc oxide from my carpet?

Zinc Oxide (Desitin) Stain Removal from Carpet

When diapering a baby on a carpet, be sure to take the proper precautions and lay a towel or changing mat underneath the baby. Zinc Oxide, the active ingredient in most diaper rash ointments, can leave a spot behind. To remove carpet stains made by zinc oxide, wipe away as much as you can with a clean cloth. Cover the remaining stain with baking soda to absorb any grease and let sit for an hour or so. When time is up, continue cleaning carpet by blotting any residue left behind with a mild dish soap. Wipe clean with a damp cloth, and no one will ever know a baby's bottom touched your floor!

It worked! My son squeezed the whole tube on the carpet. The baking soda did the trick. After letting it sit, I blotted it with a sponge with dishsoap (palmolive) and it took it right out. Thanks!

thank you so much! we're about to sell our house and my daughter smeared desitin all over our new rug. I had to do the process a couple times and really scrub but after a couple hours it came out. It still smells a little but i think will go away in a few days. thank you!

Wish I had looked at this website earlier. I called Stanley Steamer, they couldn't clean it up. They used their standard procedure after I specifically told them it was Desitin. Once the Desitin is heated up, it gets ground into the carpet, chairs, etc...oh, well...

I called the manufacturer and they suggested a professional carpet cleaner (not very helpful.)The baking soda and hot soapy water (Dawn) did the trick on my tan carpeting. I let the soda sit for over an hour, vacuumed it up and scrubbed with a sponge and hot soapy water. This process really worked. Great advice, thanks!

Genius! I was sure we'd be living with a Desitin soaked carpet forever, but it's completely gone!

NEVER leave a toddler on the same planet with a jar of Desitin!! Seriously, our little one had it smeared all over himself and the carpet in under 5 minutes. Dove and some scrubbing got it off the baby, but the rug was a different story. with these tips, we're hopeful the carpet in our rental can be salvaged
