Itchy Sweater Cure
To get your sweater wearable, first you will need to figure out what is making it itchy. Likely, it is a wool sweater, and if this is the case, there is not much you can do, except maybe wear a T-shirt underneath. If the sweater is machine washable, you can try adding a powdered water softener to the wash. If you need to hand wash it, try washing it with a protein hair shampoo. If the scratchiness is caused from detergent residue, try adding white vinegar (1/2 cup) to the rinse cycle.

I am allergic to wool - if it is a wool sweater. I agree with the general comment too about not much to do about wool unless a T-shirt. With me, it works that way until I touch the wool or rub against it, I turn all red. But if one isn't allergic to wool, I think the t-shirt and/or another shirt would be the better option. The 'older' remedy was to put talc powder before putting on the sweater. Usually polyester or cotton sweater or knit.

If it's a wool sweater, try adding a teaspoon of regular hair conditioner to the rinse water when you hand-wash it.

Using conditioner as you would fabric softener in a hand wash cycle also takes the itchy down a few notches. (Always wash your wool and cashmere sweaters the way you would your hair!)

Put white vinegar in a spray bottle, then spray it liberally onto the wool and rub it in. It may take a day for the vinegar odor to go away, but it will soften the wool fibers and get rid of the scratchiness.
